About Kate

Born in Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1961, Kate Buchan lived for the majority of her childhood in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and attended Wakefield Girls’ High School. When she came to Scarborough at eighteen to study at what was then North Riding College of Education, now University of Hull (Scarborough Campus), the focus of her studies was art, studying Sculpture & Ceramics, Drawing & Painting and Textiles (not photography, although she did use photography, particularly for her detailed textiles work).

She met her husband at college and married in 1981, obtaining a Diploma of Higher Education in 1982 and then completing her degree, after having three children, in 1993 through the Open University. Kate lived in the York area after marrying, before moving back to the Yorkshire coast in 1987.

Kate’s fascination with light, colour and form, stemming from her art background, together with a love of outdoors, means she is always aiming to produce images that have a special quality, capturing a particular combination of light, colour and composition.

After many years using film SLR’s, Kate now uses a Fuji FinePix S7000 digital camera, although the first photographs she sold were taken with a 2 million pixel digital camera.
